Day twelve of our daily Dark Season series, and the invitation that causes the most quiet panic: black tie, Halloween theme, no costume required but "creativity encouraged". That phrase is a trap for most men and an open door for you. Yesterday we argued that a black printed shirt beats a plain one; tonight that principle meets the one dress code that thinks it has already decided everything.
What does black tie actually mean at a Halloween ball?
A dinner jacket, black trousers, a formal shirt, a bow tie and black shoes. Nothing in the code says the shirt has to be white, or that the collar, sleeves and bow tie cannot carry a print. A Halloween ball loosens the rules by one notch, no more. "Black tie" with "Halloween" after it means the organisers want a ball, not a party shop. "Fancy dress, black tie optional" means the opposite, and you should read our villain's wardrobe piece instead.
What should a man wear to a black-tie Halloween ball?
A printed tuxedo shirt. Ours are cut as proper dress shirts - black or white body, black studs, a stand-up bib - with the print confined to the sleeves, shoulder yoke, collar and the matching bow tie that comes in the box. Jacket on, it reads as conventional black tie with an unusual collar and cuff. Jacket off for the dancing, and the whole print arrives at once. That is the reveal the evening is built for.

- A cape. However good the shirt, the cape is what everyone remembers.
- Plastic fangs, contact lenses or face paint - black tie, not the dentist.
- An open collar with the bow tie hanging loose before midnight.
- A white shirt with an orange bow tie. That is a school disco.
- A printed blazer over a printed shirt; one canvas per outfit.
- Brown shoes, suede shoes or trainers of any colour.
- A wing collar; that is white tie, and you are not wearing white tie.
- A costume rented that afternoon. Nothing rented ever fits.
