Tie-Dye Skulls: Psychedelic Prints for Halloween Weekend

For Halloween weekend, wear the Tie-Dye Skulls Print Shirt - Red buttoned to the collar, tucked into slim black chinos, with black leather Chelsea boots and a charcoal wool overcoat. The tie-dye does the work of a costume, the skulls reward a second look, and everything else stays black so the colour lands.

Friday, rooftop, first round. Left to right: the Tie-Dye Skulls Print Shirt - Red, the Marble Tie-Dye Shirt with Flocking Detail and the Neon Disco Print Shirt. Three shirts, zero costumes, one very good weekend.

This is day 22 of our daily Dark Season series. Yesterday we settled what to wear to a Halloween party without a costume; today we turn the colour up. Halloween lands on Saturday 31 October this year, which means a full weekend of parties, and a black shirt will not carry you through all of it.

What is a tie-dye skull shirt, and why wear one for Halloween?

It is a shirt where the skull is not the headline. The tie-dye comes first - saturated bands of red, orange, cobalt and white - and the skulls sit inside the colour, half-visible, like something you catch in the corner of your eye. That is exactly the Halloween mood a grown man wants: a nod, not a costume. Printed on Egyptian satin cotton, the colour has a soft sheen under party light that flat cotton cannot match.

Is tie-dye too loud for a Halloween party?

No - Halloween is the one night loud is expected. The trick is making it look chosen. Button it to the collar, tuck it in, and keep every other item black or charcoal. Loud shirt, quiet frame: that is the whole formula. If you are over 40 and nervous, read our guide to shirts for men over 40 - the same rule applies, just with better shoes.

How should a man wear a psychedelic print shirt at night?

Surgically. Fasten every button to the collar, or undo exactly the top one if the room is hot - never two, never three. Keep the cuffs fastened; if you must roll, fold the cuff twice to sit exactly below the elbow, and only once the jacket is off. Tuck fully into a mid-rise trouser so the print stops cleanly at a black belt. Our cut is tailored-slim; if you are between sizes, size up.

What trousers and shoes go with a tie-dye shirt?

Black slim chinos or black wool trousers, nothing lighter. Shoes are black: polished Chelsea boots, derbies or clean leather trainers. A charcoal or black overcoat in 16-18oz wool finishes it for the walk between venues. Skip denim - blue jeans fight the blue in the dye.

Element Do Don't
Buttons Collar fastened, or one undone Three open with a chain
Trousers Black slim chinos Blue jeans or combat shorts
Shoes Black Chelsea boots Coloured trainers
Outer layer Charcoal wool overcoat A second print on top
Accessories One watch, black belt Face paint and a plastic scythe

What should you not wear with a tie-dye skull shirt?

  • Tie-dye trousers. One psychedelic item per man.
  • Blue denim - it muddies the dye.
  • A white T-shirt peeking at the collar.
  • Rubber skull masks, bolt-on horns or anything with a price sticker.
  • Brown shoes - they break the black frame.
  • A patterned blazer. The shirt is the decision.
  • Rolled sleeves before midnight.
