A man dresses like a vampire without fangs in one dark, dense print: a navy rose shirt buttoned to the collar, black tailored trousers, black leather boots and a black wool overcoat worn open. Add one signet ring and nothing else. Dracula was a count, not a costume, so the print supplies the menace and the tailoring supplies the manners.

This is day 30 of our daily Dark Season series. Yesterday we put the shirt that beats the costume at the pub; today the brief is the oldest dark gentleman in fiction, translated for a man who has to catch the last train home.
What does a stylish vampire actually wear?
Strip the film versions back and the formula is simple: deep colour, rich texture, black tailoring and one sharp detail. The shirt does the storytelling. Pick a print built on midnight navy, oxblood or black with red or violet flowers, because those are the colours of the Dracula wardrobe without a single cheap prop.

How do you do Dracula without fangs or a cape?
Swap costume for cloth. A black wool overcoat or long single-breasted coat, worn open, does the cape's job. Keep the shirt fully buttoned with the collar closed, undo nothing, and let one sliver of placket show. A velvet or black wool waistcoat over the top is allowed if the shirt print is quiet; with a loud print, leave it off.
Fabric weight matters. Our shirts are Egyptian satin cotton, so they drape with a low sheen that catches candlelight the way a cheap polyester never will. Cut tailored-slim; if you are between sizes, size up, because a vampire never looks squeezed.
Which prints say vampire without saying costume?
Roses, dark florals and baroque ornament. Anything with a rose has a gothic lineage, and a baroque pattern reads as old money rather than fancy dress. Avoid bats, fangs and drips: if the print needs a caption, it is a costume.

How should the shirt be worn, button by button?
For this look the answer is the opposite of our usual advice: do up every button, including the collar. The tight, formal neckline is what makes the print look aristocratic. Fold nothing, fasten the cuffs, and let the cuff sit a half-inch past the coat sleeve. If the room is hot, undo exactly the top button, never two.
| Element | Do | Don't |
|---|---|---|
| Shirt | Navy, oxblood or black ground with roses; buttoned to the collar | Fang prints, bats, plastic collars |
| Outer layer | Black wool overcoat worn open, mid-calf or knee | A satin cape from a costume shop |
| Trousers | Black tailored, slim, a clean break at the shoe | Leather trousers and chains |
| Shoes | Black leather boots, polished toe | White trainers |
| Detail | One signet ring or a black pocket square | Fake blood, contact lenses, a pendant the size of a plate |
What should a man not wear for a vampire look?
- Plastic fangs, in any size or any lighting.
- A costume cape with a stand-up collar.
- Fake blood on the shirt. The shirt costs money; the effect costs nothing.
- Slicked-back hair so greasy it reads as a Halloween aisle.
- A pale, faded shirt that fights the dark palette.
- Three open buttons and a medallion.
- Trainers with a long coat.
What are three Dracula outfits worth building?
The Count at Dinner. Cosmic Bloom, black chinos from the Claudio Lugli Fitted Chinos, black Chelsea boots, charcoal overcoat open. Candlelit restaurant, one glass of red.
The Library Aristocrat. Winter Rose Bouquet under a black velvet waistcoat, black trousers, black brogues. For the dinner-party Halloween where no one has to know.
The Late Train Count. Garden Bloom, black chinos, a black coat to the knee, nothing else. Loud enough for a party, calm enough for the Northern line.
More from the range: the Claudio Lugli Printed Shirts Collection, the Claudio Lugli Short-Sleeve Prints Collection, the Claudio Lugli Fitted Chinos and the Claudio Lugli Fitted Chino Shorts for the weekend off-duty version.

When does it work this season?
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October, and Whitby Goth Weekend runs 30 October to 1 November, where a long coat earns its keep against the North Sea wind. Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, so the first properly dark evenings suit this look. For more ideas, read Halloween outfits without a costume, how to wear gothic shirts and the Whitby Goth Weekend guide.
