What is a dragon print shirt, and why does it work in autumn?
A dragon print is a large-scale figurative print: a creature, flames, scales or all three, laid across the body of the shirt rather than repeated as a small motif. On Egyptian satin cotton the orange and gold of a fire print sit against a charcoal ground with a faint sheen, which is exactly what candlelight, bar light and street-lamp light want to catch. In July it competes with the sun. In October it owns the room.

Is a dragon print shirt too much for a night out?
No, provided the shirt is the only decision you make. The print reads as loud because it is loud; your job is to keep everything around it silent. Plain trousers, plain shoes, plain coat. Add a patterned blazer or a chunky chain and the dragon stops being art and starts being fancy dress. What should a man wear with a dragon print shirt?
Start at the bottom. Charcoal or black trousers in a mid-weight wool or a cotton twill with no visible texture; a fitted chino in black is the smart-casual default. Black leather boots with a plain toe, or a black derby with a rubber sole for wet pavements. Belt in black, buckle small and matte. Above the shirt, a plain black or charcoal overcoat, single-breasted, worn open so the print shows through. A navy coat works with the Tiger and Dragon; it fights with the orange in Dragon Fire, so stick to charcoal there.

Should the dragon shirt be buttoned up or open?
Buttoned to the collar is the sharpest way to wear it, and it is how we shot it. It turns the shirt into one unbroken canvas. If you want it more relaxed, undo exactly the top two buttons, never three; a third button breaks the print at chest height and shows skin where you want scales. Cuffs stay fastened after dark. If you must roll, fold the cuff twice so it sits exactly below the elbow and the fold is clean, not bunched. Tuck it in. An untucked dragon looks like it has just come off a fairground ride.

Where can you wear a dragon shirt this Halloween season?
Anywhere the lights are low. A Halloween party without a costume is the obvious one: you arrive dressed, everyone else arrives disguised, and you are the only man who still looks good in the photos at midnight. It is right for a cocktail bar, a casino night, a birthday dinner in a dark-panelled restaurant, and a fashion week after-party. Bonfire Night on Thursday 5 November is the last word: a fire print under a charcoal coat, breath in the cold air, sparks overhead. It is not for the office, a funeral or a wedding where you are not the groom.

- Any jewellery that catches the light: chains, bracelets, a signet on every hand. One watch. Stop.
