What to Wear on a Halloween Date Night

Wear the Vivid Bleeding Blooms shirt in black satin cotton, buttoned to the collar, tucked into plain black wool trousers with a black leather belt and polished black Chelsea boots, and leave the costume at home. A charcoal overcoat over the arm finishes it. On a Halloween date night the shirt is the gesture; everything else stays quiet.

First to the table, hand on her chair, rain on the glass. The Vivid Bleeding Blooms shirt does the rest.

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which means the date-night question has an edge to it. Day 26 of our daily Dark Season series answers it plainly: dress like a man who booked the table, not a man who raided a fancy-dress shop. If you have already read our date night shirt guide, this is the October chapter.

What should a man wear on a Halloween date night?

A dark floral shirt, plain black trousers and good black leather. The print carries the season - roses that bleed, blooms on black, a little drama in the petals - while the rest of the outfit says you are a grown man who owns an iron. The restaurant will be candlelit, the street will be wet, and a black-ground print glows in that light the way a plain white shirt never can. Keep the fabric heavy enough to hold its shape: our satin cotton sits at the weight of a good cocktail napkin, so it drapes rather than clings.

Is a costume ever right for a first date on Halloween?

No. A costume answers a question she did not ask. If the venue insists on a nod to the night, let it live in the print: a skull hidden in a rose, a moth among the blooms, a palette of oxblood and midnight. That is the Dark Season rule we set on day one in the dark season wardrobe, and it holds hardest when someone is sitting opposite you for three hours.

Which dark floral prints work best for date night?

The ones with a black ground and a single dominant colour. Red on black is the obvious one and still the best; the trick is scale. Large blooms read as confident across a table; tiny ditsy prints read as a shirt you bought for a wedding in 2019.

For the full argument on why black-ground florals own autumn, read the dark floral shirt guide. For tonight, pick one of the three above or the cover shirt and stop deliberating.

How should the shirt be buttoned, tucked and finished?

Buttoned to the collar if you are wearing it without a jacket; the closed collar frames the face and keeps the print as one unbroken panel. If you must open it, undo exactly the top button, never two, and never on a first date. Cuffs fastened, sleeves down - a candlelit room is not the place for a forearm. Tuck the shirt fully into the trousers and let the belt sit at the natural waist so the print finishes in a clean horizontal line. Trousers: plain black wool or heavy black cotton, flat front, a slight break on the shoe. Shoes: black leather Chelsea boots or a plain black derby, polished that afternoon. Our shirts are cut tailored-slim; if you are between sizes, size up, because a pulled placket in candlelight is the one thing she will notice.

Element Do Don't
Shirt Black-ground floral, large scale, one dominant colour Pumpkin orange, cartoon ghosts, anything glow-in-the-dark
Buttons Closed to the collar, or one undone at most Three open and a chain
Trousers Plain black wool, flat front, slight break Skinny jeans, cargo pockets, printed trousers with a printed shirt
Shoes Polished black Chelsea boots or derbies Trainers, however white
Layer Charcoal or navy overcoat, worn open or carried A cape. Ever.
Scent and detail One watch, one fragrance, clean nails Fake blood, face paint, novelty cufflinks

What do you wear over it now the evenings are dark?

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, so Halloween week is the first properly dark one of the year. Carry a plain charcoal wool overcoat and wear it open; the print should run down the chest uninterrupted and show at the cuff. A navy blazer works the same way if the restaurant is smarter. Skip the scarf unless it is plain black cashmere, and skip the hat entirely - nobody has ever been kissed goodnight in a beanie.

Baroque Legacy Collection - if florals feel too soft, this is the dark alternative: gilt, ornament, a hint of the gothic, no skulls required.

What not to wear on a Halloween date night

  • A costume of any kind, including the ironic ones.
  • Fake blood, face paint or coloured contact lenses.
  • An orange shirt, an orange tie, orange anything.
  • A printed shirt with printed trousers; one print per outfit.
  • Trainers, however new, however white.
  • A shirt unbuttoned past the second button.
  • A novelty tie, a novelty belt buckle or a novelty watch face.
  • Anything bought that afternoon because you forgot the date.

Three Claudio Lugli date-night edits

The corner table. The Vivid Bleeding Blooms shirt from the Claudio Lugli Printed Shirts Collection, black wool trousers, black Chelsea boots, a charcoal overcoat worn open. Exactly what the cover shows, and the one to copy if you only read this far.

The late drink. The House of Dahlia shirt with black Claudio Lugli Fitted Chinos and a plain black derby. Softer blooms, same darkness, right for a cocktail bar where you will be standing more than sitting.

The warm-city option. If you are reading this from somewhere the evening is still 20 degrees, the Claudio Lugli Short-Sleeve Prints Collection over navy Claudio Lugli Fitted Chino Shorts and brown leather loafers. Not for London in October; very much for Lisbon.

Yesterday's chapter covered the Halloween office party; if the date is a house party rather than a restaurant, what to wear to a Halloween party without a costume has the louder prints. Tomorrow: the pub.

Halloween date night: the questions men ask

Is a black floral shirt too much for a first date?

No - it is the right amount, provided the trousers and shoes are plain black and the collar is closed.

Should I wear a jacket over a printed shirt for dinner?

Carry a plain overcoat or navy blazer and wear it open; the print must stay visible from collar to belt.

Can I wear a skull shirt on a Halloween date?

Only a subtle one, with the skulls hidden in florals; a wall of skulls belongs at the party on Saturday, not across a table for two.

Black trousers or dark jeans with a dark floral shirt?

Black wool trousers for a restaurant, dark indigo jeans only for a pub, never skinny either way.

What shoes go with a dark floral shirt on a date?

Polished black Chelsea boots or a plain black derby; trainers end the conversation before it starts.

Do Claudio Lugli shirts fit slim?

They are cut tailored-slim; if you are between sizes, size up.
