Halloween Shirt or Christmas Shirt? Buy Once, Wear Both

Written by Nav Salimian Updated Approx. 5 min read
Halloween or Christmas shirt: hotel bar at night; Sri Lankan-British man, 47, grey-flecked beard, in Antique Porcelain Vase shirt; Scottish man, 38, copper hair, in Heritage Poppy shirt

Wear one cream poppy-print satin cotton shirt, buttoned to the collar, under an open black wool blazer with black trousers and black leather boots. The red reads as Halloween blood on 31 October and as holly on 25 December, so a single shirt earns both seasons. Buy it once, wear it twice.

The last hour before the hotel bar shuts: the Heritage Poppy Print Shirt on the right, the Antique Porcelain Vase Print Shirt on the left. One night, one shirt each, no costume.

This is day 50 of our daily Dark Season series. Yesterday we put a skull blazer over a plain shirt, in the ornamental skull blazer guide. Today the question is thrift: Halloween is Saturday 31 October, the clocks went back on Sunday, and the Christmas party invitations are already landing.

Can one printed shirt work for both Halloween and Christmas?

Yes, if the print is a pattern and not a prop. A pumpkin shirt is dead on 1 November. A dense floral, a baroque ornament or a deep red poppy field is not tied to a date, so it works at a Halloween party, at the office do and at the family table. Costume dates the shirt; colour does not.

Our no-costume Halloween edit makes the first half of the case. The Christmas party shirt guide makes the second. This piece is the bridge.

Antique Porcelain Vase Print Shirt - a black ground and colour in the right places. The sophisticated side of dark.

Which prints cross over from October to December?

Look for three things: a dark or deep ground, saturated reds, greens or golds, and a motif that is botanical, baroque or abstract. Avoid anything that names its season. Five that pass the test, all in stock as we write:

How do you dress the same shirt for each occasion?

The shirt stays put. The frame around it changes. For Halloween, keep everything black: black wool blazer worn open, black trousers, black boots, shirt buttoned to the collar. For Christmas, swap one thing for warmth: a bottle-green or deep burgundy waistcoat over the shirt, and brown leather shoes if the venue is a pub, not a ballroom.

Fold the cuff twice so it sits exactly below the elbow when you are off the clock. Undo the top button and no more at the office party; never the top three. Cut is tailored-slim, so if you are between sizes, size up, especially if a waistcoat is going over it.

Element Do Don't
Print Dense, dark or deep red, botanical or baroque Pumpkins, snowmen or anything dated
Layer Black wool blazer in October; green waistcoat in December A novelty jumper over the top
Trousers Black or charcoal, plain Anything patterned or shiny
Shoes Black leather boots; brown leather for the pub White trainers
Collar Buttoned; top button undone at most Three buttons open
Accessories One signet ring or a watch Fangs, antlers or a light-up tie

What should a man never wear to a Halloween-then-Christmas party season?

  • A shirt with a date on it: pumpkins, ghosts or reindeer are single-use.
  • Novelty ties, hats or anything that lights up or plays a tune.
  • A cheap jersey fabric that clings and creases after one night.
  • Three open buttons and a chain: it is a party, not a holiday.
  • Trainers with a blazer in a hotel bar.
  • Sleeves rolled to the bicep. Fold the cuff twice, no further.
  • A print so pale it vanishes in candlelight.

What are three outfit edits that run from October to December?

Edit one: the Halloween-to-carols. The Heritage Poppy Print Shirt, black wool blazer, black trousers, black boots on 31 October. Add a bottle-green waistcoat for Christmas. Browse the full Claudio Lugli Printed Shirts Collection for the rest of the cabinet.

Edit two: the candlelit dinner. The Antique Porcelain Vase Print Shirt with charcoal Claudio Lugli Fitted Chinos and brown leather shoes. Fits a Halloween supper and a December table.

Edit three: the one for the warm room. The Tartan Check Print Shirt in the evening, and for anyone heading somewhere warmer in the new year, the Claudio Lugli Short-Sleeve Prints Collection and Claudio Lugli Fitted Chino Shorts. Contrast it with the Deck the Halls Christmas Tuxedo Shirt for the night itself.

Winter roses are the shirt that does Whitby this weekend and the Christmas lunch in eight weeks.

Is a satin cotton shirt warm enough for November?

Egyptian satin cotton is a dense weave and holds heat better than a thin poplin. With a wool blazer on top it carries you from Halloween through the Bonfire Night walk on Thursday 5 November. Below about 8 degrees, add a merino layer beneath and size up.

FAQ

Can I wear a Halloween shirt to a Christmas party?

Yes, as long as the print is a pattern, not a pumpkin, and the colour is deep.

Which colour travels best from October to December?

Deep red on cream or black, with a dark floral a close second.

Does the shirt need a different layer for Christmas?

Swap the black blazer for a bottle-green waistcoat and you have changed the whole mood.

What if I am between sizes?

The cut is tailored-slim, so if you are between sizes, size up.

Is it worth buying a print shirt for two occasions?

Yes: a shirt worn on 31 October and 25 December costs half as much per wear.
