Wear a fully buttoned dark floral shirt in burgundy, bronze or midnight, an open charcoal blazer, black tailored trousers and black leather shoes. Halloween belongs in the print, never in a costume. Fasten the cuffs, leave the jacket open so the pattern runs down your chest, and arrive looking planned.

Day 33 of our daily Dark Season series. Yesterday we covered what to wear to Fright Nights, and today we deal with the wedding that lands in Halloween season. If the couple has asked for a theme, read the invitation twice. If they have not, you are dressing for a wedding first and the calendar second.
What should a man wear to a Halloween wedding?
Start with the dress code and treat the date as a seasoning. A dark print in satin cotton does the work a costume tries to do, with none of the risk. The shirt carries the mood, so everything around it stays plain: charcoal or navy tailoring, black shoes, a dark tie only if the invitation says so. For the wider case, our autumn wedding guest guide covers the daytime version.
Is a printed shirt acceptable at a wedding?
Yes, when the ground is dark, the scale is controlled and the shirt is buttoned properly. Midnight, burgundy and bronze grounds read as formal in candlelight. Avoid anything with a white ground and a loud motif; it photographs like a holiday. Our gothic wedding guest piece goes deeper on the darkest end.

How do you wear the shirt, exactly?
Undo exactly the top button for a tie-free ceremony, never two. Button the cuffs. If you take the jacket off at the reception, fold the sleeves twice so the cuff sits exactly below the elbow. Tuck the shirt in; an untucked print at a wedding looks like you left early. Our cut is tailored-slim; if you are between sizes, size up, because a barn dance needs room in the shoulders.
What is the dress code at a barn or country house wedding?
Expect gravel, hay and cold. Choose wool tailoring in charcoal, navy or bottle green, leather soles with a rubber top-lift, and a coat you can drop on a chair. Satin cotton at roughly 120gsm feels light on the skin and dresses up under candlelight, so you can keep the layers honest outside and open inside. Pack a spare pair of socks and a lint roller; hay and velvet chairs are unkind to dark cloth, and nobody wants to greet the bride with straw on the sleeve.

Which colours and fabrics work after dark?
| Element | Do | Don't |
|---|---|---|
| Shirt ground | Midnight, burgundy, bronze | White ground, neon |
| Jacket | Charcoal or navy, worn open | A second print |
| Collar | Top button undone, never two | Chest on show |
| Trousers | Black, tailored, no break | Chinos in a bright colour |
| Shoes | Black leather, polished | Trainers, novelty socks |
| Theme | One dark nod, in the print | Fangs, capes, face paint |
What not to wear to a Halloween wedding
- Anything that needs a mask, a cape or face paint.
- A white or pale shirt that photographs as a holiday.
- A novelty tie, glow-in-the-dark anything or a pumpkin pocket square.
- An open collar with the chest on show.
- Rolled sleeves before the speeches are over.
- Trainers on a gravel path.
- Competing with the couple: black head to toe plus a veil is their job.
What are three outfit edits that work?
The Candlelit Ceremony. The Midnight Bloom with a navy blazer, black trousers and black Oxfords. The Claudio Lugli Fitted Chinos work if the invitation says country casual.
The Barn Dance. The Wavy Ornaments under a charcoal overcoat, kept open, with black tailored trousers. Browse the full Claudio Lugli Printed Shirts Collection for more grounds in the same mood.
The Reception Only. The Floral Shimmer Tencel Bronze with a bottle-green waistcoat. If the venue is warm or abroad, the Claudio Lugli Short-Sleeve Prints Collection and the Claudio Lugli Fitted Chino Shorts suit a daytime ceremony outdoors.

If the weekend is full, our Halloween outfits without a costume guide covers the party after the wedding, and dark floral shirts explains the prints in detail. Halloween is Saturday 31 October; clocks go back Sunday 25 October, so the first evenings of your wedding season arrive earlier.
Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a skull shirt to a Halloween wedding?

Should I wear a tie with a printed shirt?
Only for a formal ceremony, in a dark plain knit, with the top button done up.
What colour jacket suits a dark print?
Charcoal or navy, plain, worn open so the print runs down the chest.
Is black too much for a wedding guest?
Black trousers are fine; black head to toe belongs to the couple.
Do I size up in a Claudio Lugli shirt?
Our cut is tailored-slim; if you are between sizes, size up.
