The Poppy Shirt: Wearing a Symbol of Remembrance

Heritage & Remembrance

Few flowers carry the weight the poppy does. It is not really a print at all - it is a symbol, and one worth wearing thoughtfully.

The story of the poppy

The red poppy became a symbol of remembrance after the First World War, inspired by the poppies that grew across the churned battlefields of Flanders. It was the Canadian physician John McCrae, in his 1915 poem In Flanders Fields, who fixed the image in memory - the poppies blowing between the rows of graves. In the years since, the flower has come to stand for remembrance of all who have served and died in conflict.

Why a poppy shirt

A poppy shirt is not a replacement for the small paper poppy worn each November - nothing is. It is something quieter and more personal: a way to carry a symbol you care about with intention, whether at a commemorative event, a family gathering, or simply as a piece with genuine meaning behind it. Worn simply, with everything else kept plain and respectful, it speaks for itself.

How to wear it

With restraint. Keep everything else plain and dark - navy or charcoal trousers, a simple shoe - and let the shirt carry the message. A poppy print is at its most powerful understated, so avoid competing patterns and loud accessories. Worn this way, it reads as considered and sincere rather than showy.

The poppy shirt: FAQs

What does the poppy symbolise?

The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance for those who have served and died in war. It dates to the First World War and the poppies that grew on the battlefields of Flanders, made famous by John McCrae's 1915 poem In Flanders Fields.

When do you wear a poppy?

Traditionally the paper poppy is worn in the run-up to Remembrance Day on 11 November. A poppy print shirt can be worn whenever you wish to carry the symbol thoughtfully - at commemorative events or simply as a piece with meaning.
