A Complete Guide to WWE's Eras: From the Golden Age to Today

Wrestling history can feel like a tangle of names, titles and territories. The easiest way to make sense of it is to think in eras. Each one has its own tone, its own icons and, crucially for us, its own look. Here is a clear guide to WWE's major eras and the legends who defined them.

The Golden Age (1980s to early 1990s)

This is the era that took wrestling mainstream. Larger-than-life heroes, bright colours and Saturday-morning spectacle turned regional wrestling into a national phenomenon. It was cartoonish in the best way: bold, broad and built for a family audience. The visual language was pure comic-book, and it set the template for wrestling as a merchandise machine.

The New Generation (early-to-mid 1990s)

As the old guard aged out, WWE leaned on a new wave of athletic, technically gifted performers. This is where a young Shawn Michaels began his rise to Mr WrestleMania status, and where the in-ring craft of the sport took a real step forward. Meanwhile, over in WCW, Ric Flair and Sting were carrying the torch for a rival product that would soon change everything.

The Attitude Era (1997 to 2002)

The defining boom period. Facing WCW in the Monday Night Wars, WWE went edgier, louder and more rebellious, and won. This is the era of Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock, of D-Generation X, and of merchandise that behaved like streetwear. Over in WCW, the nWo ran a rebellion of their own. We cover the whole period in our Attitude Era guide.

Ruthless Aggression and the modern eras (2002 onwards)

After WWE absorbed WCW, a new generation stepped up under the Ruthless Aggression banner, followed by the family-friendly PG era and today's globe-spanning product. Through it all, one thing stayed constant: the sport keeps producing icons whose imagery escapes the ring, from luchador legends like Rey Mysterio to the enduring cool of a great mask or face design.

Wearing the history

Every one of these eras left behind a visual legacy, and that is what the Claudio Lugli WWE Icons Collection is built to celebrate: officially licensed, artist-led prints of the legends who defined each period, from Flair and Piper to The Rock, Rey Mysterio and Sting, in premium satin cotton.
