First Dark Evenings: What Men Should Wear After the Clocks Go Back

Escrito por Nav Salimian Actualizado Lectura aprox.: 5 min
What to wear after the clocks go back: Bloomsbury square at dusk; Ghanaian-British man, 46, shaved head, glasses, Vintage Grand Prix Poster print; Welsh man, 31, ginger hair, London Lifestyle print

For the first dark evenings after the clocks go back, wear one loud printed shirt buttoned to the collar under an open charcoal wool overcoat, with black trousers and black leather boots. Add a dark scarf if it bites. The sky has stopped supplying colour, so let the shirt do it.

Five o'clock, a lit lamp, wet leaves: the Vintage Grand Prix Poster and London Lifestyle prints walking home.

The clocks went back on Sunday 25 October, and London now loses the light before five. Halloween lands on Saturday 31 October, Whitby Goth Weekend runs 30 October to 1 November and Bonfire Night is Thursday 5 November, so you will spend most of the next fortnight dressing for darkness. This is day 52 of our daily Dark Season series; yesterday we covered the last-minute Halloween outfit.

What should a man wear after the clocks go back?

Dress for the walk, not the room. You leave the office in half-light and arrive in full dark, so the outfit needs one idea that survives both: a dense print in saturated colour. Keep everything else plain. Charcoal or navy overcoat worn open, black trousers, black boots, no pocket square, no second pattern. If you are between sizes, size up; the cut is tailored-slim and an overcoat needs room across the shoulder.

Why do bold prints work better in the dark?

Street lamps are warm and low. They flatten pale shirts and make muted ones vanish, but they lift deep blues, reds, rose and teal. A satin cotton shirt also catches the light along the sleeve, which a matt poplin never will. That is why the two men on the cover read from fifty yards away on a wet pavement.

How do you layer a printed shirt for a cold evening?

Start with the shirt buttoned to the collar and the cuffs fastened, so the print shows at the wrist when the coat opens. Add a wool overcoat or tailored jacket in charcoal, navy or bottle green, worn open so the print runs down the chest. Indoors, undo exactly the top button, never two. A lightweight dark knit under the jacket is fine; a chunky one hides the print and defeats the point. Our smart casual guide covers where this sits in a dress code.

Element Do Don't
Shirt One dense, saturated print, buttoned to the collar Pastel or low-contrast prints that vanish at dusk
Coat Open charcoal or navy wool, shoulders sitting square A puffer over satin cotton
Trousers Black or charcoal, tapered to the ankle Patterned trousers competing with the shirt
Shoes Black leather boots, polished White trainers in a wet street
Extras A dark scarf, a good watch Pocket square, tie pin, second print

What should you not wear on a dark evening?

  • Pale grey or stone prints that the lamplight bleaches out
  • A black shirt under a black coat, which leaves nothing to look at
  • A fleece or hoodie over a printed shirt
  • Shorts with boots, however mild the pub
  • Three buttons undone to show a vest in October
  • A wet-look raincoat that hides the whole shirt
  • A costume mask on the walk home; save it for the party

What are three outfits for the first dark evenings?

The Halloween weekend. The Vegas at Night Print Shirt under a navy herringbone jacket, black chinos, black boots. Our no-costume Halloween edit shows more.

The warm room. The Cosmic Bloom Print Shirt on its own in a hotel bar or a flat with the heating on. For a short-sleeved option, the Claudio Lugli Short-Sleeve Prints Collection suits a crowded venue, and if the evening ends somewhere warmer, pack the Claudio Lugli Fitted Chino Shorts.

How do you keep the shirt looking sharp all evening?

Press the placket and collar before you leave, because a coat will crease the shoulders within the hour. Hang the shirt, not the coat, on the hook at the pub so the sleeves stay clean. Carry a small umbrella rather than wearing a hood, which crushes the collar. When you get home, steam the shirt rather than ironing the print directly, and it will look as good on Saturday as it did on Thursday. Satin cotton rewards that ten minutes of care.

Where do you wear this after dark?

The pub, the dinner, the party, the walk between. For a wider night-out brief, see our going out shirts guide, or the pub outfit guide if the evening starts at the bar.

Frequently asked questions

Do printed shirts work in winter?

Yes: satin cotton under a wool coat is warmer than it looks, and the print is the only colour in the street.

Should I button the top button?

Outdoors, yes; indoors, undo exactly the top one and leave the rest.

What coat suits a printed shirt?

A plain charcoal, navy or bottle-green wool overcoat, worn open.

Which colours show best at night?

Deep blue, red, teal and rose; avoid pale grey and stone.

Is the cut slim?

The cut is tailored-slim; if you are between sizes, size up.
