Dress for standing still in a field at 7pm in November. The base layer is a printed shirt in Egyptian satin cotton, buttoned to the collar, because a shut collar keeps the wind off your neck. Over it, an open overcoat or a heavy waxed jacket in black, charcoal or olive. Below, black trousers and boots with a proper sole, since grass is wet and gravel is worse.

Is a bold print too much for a bonfire?
No. A field of people in navy and black waterproofs is the best argument for it. The print is the only colour in the frame, which is precisely why it works. If you want the dial turned down, pick Alpine Sunset or Woodland Camo, where the colour is earthy rather than electric.
