What is the difference between Day of the Dead and Halloween?
Halloween, 31 October, grew out of Samhain and All Hallows' Eve; its mood is fright. Dia de los Muertos, 1 and 2 November, is a Mexican celebration rooted in Indigenous tradition and All Souls' Day; its mood is welcome, with altars, candles and marigolds inviting the dead home for a night. One tradition frightens the dead away; the other sets a place for them at the table.
What do the sugar skulls and marigolds on a Day of the Dead shirt mean?
The calavera, the decorated skull, is not macabre. It is a portrait of a loved one, sweetened with sugar and painted with flowers, a grin rather than a grimace. Marigolds, cempasuchil, are the orange path that guides spirits home by scent and colour. Monarch butterflies, arriving in Mexico each November, are read as returning souls. How should a man wear a sugar skull shirt without it looking like a costume?
