Goodwood style advice and enclosure rules are different
This edit records the July 2026 Ladies’ Day wardrobe. For a later race meeting, use the current ticket and Goodwood Racecourse dress-code page. The organiser offers different guidance for Richmond, Gordon and Lennox; do not assume every hospitality area shares the same policy.
A practical women’s race-day outfit
Try a printed shirt with plain full-length trousers or a skirt you can sit and walk in, then add a jacket if the forecast calls for it. Hat, scarf and jewellery choices are optional styling decisions unless your invitation says otherwise.
- Test your shoes for the whole walking route; a comfortable flat or stable heel can be a better choice than an untested high heel.
- Check whether the jacket closes comfortably over the shirt, especially through the bust.
- Carry rain protection when needed; a tailored blazer is not automatically waterproof.
For the man attending with you, Richmond requires the specified jacket, long-sleeved collared shirt and tie outfit. Use his guide separately.

Ladies' Day at Glorious Goodwood
Thursday 30 July 2026 · Goodwood Racecourse, West Sussex
Five days of flat racing on the Downs — and one afternoon that belongs to the women
The ninth Duke of Richmond's guests called Glorious Goodwood a garden party with racing attached, and no day proves it like the Thursday. Ladies' Day on the Downs is not Royal Ascot — there is no rulebook about hat brims, no morning-dress police. Goodwood publishes enclosure-specific guidance; choose the outfit for your ticket and any hospitality area. Which is precisely why it is the best-dressed day in British racing: when the dress code relaxes, style has to come from the woman, not the regulations.
“Ascot is a uniform. Goodwood is a mood.”
The Thinking Woman's Race-Day Formula
The photographs that survive from Goodwood are never the loudest outfits; they are the most fluent ones. The formula we dress our own clients by: a printed statement, a tailored frame, and one considered accessory. The print speaks to the occasion — at a race meeting, an equestrian motif is not a costume, it is a courtesy. The tailoring makes it serious. The accessory (a panama, a silk scarf at the handle of a bag) says you have done this before.

The Statement: Equestrian Prints That Speak the Language
The Snaffle print is the house signature — horse-bit hardware repeated like a Hermès dream, in colours no heritage house would dare. Wear it tucked into wide ecru trousers with a woven belt. The Horse Rider print goes further, jockeys-up and galloping; it wants a plain skirt and very little competition. And the Lucky Charm Horseshoe is the diplomatic one — geometric at distance, sentimental up close, and quietly appropriate for a day when everyone is backing something.
The Frame: Tailoring That Wins the Enclosure
Over the print goes the piece that makes it Ladies' Day rather than lunch: a double-breasted jacket with real structure. The Ascot Herringbone Contrast Blazer is the flagship — English herringbone with a contrast placket line, named for one race meeting and made for all of them. The Equestrian Elegance jacket prints the paddock straight onto the tailoring; wear it over our plain satin shirt and let the jacket do the talking.

Three Looks, One Racecard
The Richmond Enclosure lunch: the Ascot Herringbone blazer over the Classic Plain shirt, cream trousers, suede loafers — racing silks in spirit, boardroom in execution. The lawn picnic: the Snaffle shirt half-tucked into white denim, panama, espadrilles; add the Miss Charm linen shirt dress to the bag as the heatwave option. The final furlong into evening: the Horse Rider print under a navy blazer as the Channel breeze arrives — the course sits on a hilltop and the wind is real; a jacket is never wasted at Goodwood.
“At a race meeting, an equestrian print is not a costume. It is a courtesy.”
Dressing as a Pair
If you are taking a man — and Goodwood is better with an accomplice — send him to our men's Glorious Goodwood guide and settle one rule between you: one of you wears the loud print, the other frames it. Matching is for tourists; conversing is for couples.
