They are the most versatile print a man can own between September and Christmas because they read as floral in daylight and as texture after dark. How do you wear a bold shirt in autumn without a jacket?
Fully buttoned. This is the house rule and it is the whole difference between a shirt that looks like a decision and a shirt that looks like it was the nearest thing on the chair. Button to the collar, no tie, cuffs fastened, and tuck it. A statement print worn open over a T-shirt is a summer habit; in the dark season it reads as unfinished.
Fabric weight matters now. Look for a satin-weave cotton around 130 to 140gsm: enough body to hold a crease line down the sleeve, enough sheen to catch a street lamp. Below 110gsm you will feel the wind through it by October. The tuck should be clean with no blousing - pull the shirt down through the waistband once, then leave it alone.
What trousers and shoes go with a dark printed shirt?
Charcoal wool trousers, slim through the thigh, with a 7-inch leg opening and a quarter break over the shoe. Black is acceptable; charcoal is better because it lets the black in the print stay the darkest thing in the outfit. Never a dark jean with a dark print - the two blacks fight and both lose. What is the one layer to buy for the dark season?
A black wool overcoat, single-breasted, finishing just above the knee. Worn open it frames the print like a gallery wall; worn closed it turns the outfit into a coat and a pair of shoes, which is fine for the walk and irrelevant once you are inside. A navy peacoat does the same job for a shorter frame. What you do not need is a printed jacket over a printed shirt - the print is the event, and events do not need a warm-up act.
What not to wear when the nights draw in
- The summer print in September. A pastel short sleeve under a coat looks like you got dressed in July and never stopped.
- The open collar. Three buttons undone in the cold is not relaxed, it is unfinished.
- Black jeans with a black print. Two blacks, no depth, and the shirt disappears.
- The puffer over a statement shirt. The print is art; do not hang a duvet in front of it.
- A second pattern. Checked coat, striped scarf, printed socks - pick one, and you already picked the shirt.
- Tan shoes after dark. They pull the eye to the floor. The eye should be on the chest.
- The novelty skull. A cartoon skull is a costume. An embroidered or jewelled one is a print. Know which you are buying.
- Anything with a hood. Not this season, not with this shirt.
