What is a gothic shirt for men?
A gothic shirt is a dark-ground shirt whose print borrows from the gothic visual tradition: skulls, roses, thorns, baroque scrollwork, cathedral tracery, dragons, ravens, smoke. The ground is black, midnight or oxblood. The motif is drawn like an engraving or an oil painting, never like a cartoon. That last line is the whole test. Which gothic prints work for autumn 2026?
Skulls and roses, together. The pairing is two centuries old - death and beauty in one frame - and it is why a skulls-and-roses print reads as romantic rather than aggressive. Look for the roses in violet, oxblood or bone against black; avoid red-on-black, which tips into rock-bar territory.
Baroque scrollwork. Gilt acanthus leaves and damask on a black ground. What should you wear with a gothic shirt?
Black wool trousers, flat-fronted, slim through the thigh, 7-inch leg opening, quarter break. Black leather derbies for the day, black patent for anything after eight, black Chelsea boots for the weather. The coat is black wool, single-breasted, above the knee, worn open. - The novelty skull. If it would look at home on a mug, it does not belong on a shirt.
