Halloween Weekend Away: The Dark-Season Packing List for Men

Halloween weekend away packing list for men: three friends in a country-house hotel lobby - Nigerian-British 47 glasses in Monaco Montage, Japanese 34 tied-back hair in Monaco Heritage, Scottish 55 white hair in Monaco Riviera

For a Halloween weekend away, pack one fixed outfit: a Monaco Heritage print shirt in navy and grey, black fitted chinos, black leather boots and a charcoal overcoat, worn buttoned to the collar. Add two more printed shirts, one plain black knit and a second pair of black trousers. Everything else is optional.

Friday, dusk, rain on the glass. Three men, three Monaco prints, two holdalls and no costume between them.

This is day 46 of our daily Dark Season series, and the weekend is close: Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October, the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October so the evenings arrive early, and Whitby Goth Weekend runs 30 October to 1 November. Yesterday we covered big and tall Halloween shirts. Today is about the bag.

What should a man pack for a Halloween weekend away?

Three printed shirts, two pairs of trousers, one plain knit, one overcoat, one pair of boots and one pair of plain trainers for the morning. That is the whole list. The shirts do the talking, so everything around them stays black, charcoal or navy and nothing needs ironing twice.

How many shirts does a two-night trip need?

Three. One for the Friday arrival, one for the Saturday night and one for the Sunday walk or lunch. Choose them as a trio with different jobs: one confident but calm, one properly loud, one dark and detailed. Never pack two prints that fight each other, because you will wear neither.

Element Do Don't
Shirts Three prints, one per night, rolled or folded flat Five 'just in case' shirts
Trousers Black fitted chinos, worn Friday, packed spare for Saturday Jeans with a rip at the knee
Outer layer Charcoal or black wool overcoat, worn open over the shirt A novelty cape
Shoes Black leather boots on your feet, plain trainers in the bag Three pairs for a two-night stay
Bag One tan or black leather holdall, shirts on top A hard suitcase for a country house
Extras One plain black merino crew, a belt, a tin of lint tape A costume accessory 'for the photos'

How do you stop a printed shirt creasing in a holdall?

Button every shirt to the collar and fasten the cuffs, then fold it in thirds with the print facing inwards. Lay it on top of the bag, never underneath the boots. Egyptian satin cotton recovers well, and ten minutes hanging in a steamy bathroom takes out whatever remains. Pack the shirt you will wear first on the very top.

What should you wear to travel on the Friday?

Wear the heaviest items so the bag carries the light ones: the Heritage shirt buttoned to the collar with the top two buttons undone only once you are through the door, black chinos, black boots and the charcoal overcoat. Fold the cuff twice so it sits exactly below the elbow if the hotel is warm. You arrive looking dressed, not dressed up.

What should you pack for Whitby Goth Weekend or a country-house hotel?

Add one dark, detailed print and one windproof layer. Whitby is exposed and the 199 steps are no place for a thin shirt alone, so a wool overcoat or a waxed jacket worn open over the print works. We covered the full brief in what to wear to Whitby Goth Weekend. For a country-house hotel, the lobby, the fire and the dining room reward a shirt with some weight in the print.

Which three shirts should you pack?

Here are three ready-made trios from Claudio Lugli. Each shirt is tailored-slim, so if you are between sizes, size up.

Edit one: the arrival. Monaco Heritage, fitted chinos, black boots, charcoal overcoat. Buttoned to the collar, cuffs fastened.

Edit two: Halloween night. Day of the Dead Neon Skulls with black trousers and black boots, undone at the top two buttons, never three, once the drinks arrive.

Edit three: Sunday. Embroidery Skulls under the plain black merino, collar showing, with the overcoat worn open.

What not to wear or pack

  • A shirt you have never worn: test every print before it travels.
  • Two loud prints on the same night.
  • Rolled sleeves on a shirt with a contrast cuff.
  • White trainers with black tailoring.
  • Fangs, capes or a plastic anything.
  • A suitcase that will not fit under a four-poster bed.
  • Only one pair of trousers when it rains.
