The Hawaiian Shirt: A Man's Guide to Holiday and Vegas Style

Holiday and Vegas

Poolside to the Strip - the Hawaiian shirt is the only shirt that does holiday and Vegas in one. A short history, and three ways to wear it with shorts.

No other shirt carries a holiday in its DNA quite like the Hawaiian. Put one on and you are, instantly, off the clock - it is a mood as much as a garment. And unlike most holiday clothing, it has genuine range: the same shirt that works with swim shorts by the pool can, with the right one and the right styling, walk you into a Las Vegas bar after dark. Here is how to wear it properly, and where it came from.

A short history

The aloha shirt was born in Hawaii in the 1930s, when local tailors began cutting shirts from bright, patterned fabric. Tourism and returning servicemen carried it worldwide, and the idea of a smart-casual printed shirt - even the phrase Aloha Friday, ancestor of casual Friday - spread with it. Nearly a century on, it is still shorthand for one thing: time off, worn well.

The one styling rule

A Hawaiian shirt is already doing a lot, so everything around it stays simple: plain shorts or trousers, clean footwear, and let the print be the whole story. Fit matters more than you would think - a tailored cut keeps it looking deliberate rather than like fancy dress. And the bolder the print, the calmer everything else should be.

Three ways to wear it with shorts

One shirt style, three completely different holidays - all built on a pair of chino shorts.

By day it is a holiday. By night, in black, it is Vegas. Same shirt, different world.

Getting the shorts right

The Hawaiian shirt lives or dies on what you pair below it, and in warm weather that means shorts. Keep them tailored, not baggy, and just above the knee - a fitted chino short in a neutral tone lets the shirt be the star while keeping the whole look sharp rather than sloppy. Neutral shorts, bold shirt: that is the entire holiday uniform.

Hawaiian shirts: FAQs

Can you wear a Hawaiian shirt to a night out?

Yes - choose a darker, moodier print, pair it with black shorts or trousers and a leather shoe or boot, and it shifts from beach to bar. A Vegas night is exactly its element.

What shorts go with a Hawaiian shirt?

Tailored chino shorts in a neutral tone, cut just above the knee. Keep them plain so the shirt stays the statement.

How should a Hawaiian shirt fit?

Relaxed but not oversized - a tailored cut through the body keeps it looking sharp and intentional rather than like fancy dress.
