What to Wear to the Races: The Women’s Guide
Goodwood, Ascot, Cheltenham & beyond — one wardrobe philosophy for every meeting
The British racing calendar is really a dress calendar with horses attached. From Glorious Goodwood’s garden-party linen to Royal Ascot’s formal hems to Cheltenham’s herringbone-and-wool winter, each meeting has its own register — but one philosophy carries a woman through all of them: a printed statement, a tailored frame, and one considered accessory. This is the master guide; each fixture then has its own deep-dive linked below.
“Dress for the garden party. Win the racing.”
The Formula That Works at Every Meeting
The photographs that survive a race day are never the loudest outfits — they’re the most fluent. The formula: the print speaks to the occasion (at a race meeting an equestrian motif is a courtesy, not a costume); the tailoring makes it serious; the accessory — a hat, a silk scarf at the handle of a bag — says you’ve done this before. Colour reads best against the turf, and a jacket is never wasted: British courses are breezy even in a heatwave.

Meeting by Meeting
Glorious Goodwood (late July) is the most relaxed of the majors — a garden party where linen replaces morning dress. Full guide: Ladies’ Day at Glorious Goodwood. Goodwood Revival (September) asks you to dress in the styles of 1948–1966 — pick your decade and commit: the Revival women’s guide. Cheltenham’s November Meeting and the March Festival are winter racing — herringbone, wool and a warm layer: the Festival Ladies Day guide. And Royal Ascot (June) is the strictest dress code in British sport, decoded here: Royal Ascot Ladies Day.
The Country Set, Too
Beyond the racecourse, the same wardrobe carries the horse-trials season — Burghley, Badminton and the county shows. The full country-and-riding wardrobe is in The Equestrienne, and the tailoring that anchors all of it — the herringbone riding jackets, the Ascot blazer — is mapped in The Tailoring Room.
