Halloween at the Pub: The Shirt That Beats the Costume

Wear one printed shirt, not a costume: the brown-black Midnight Club Cross Beam shirt buttoned to the collar, plain black trousers, black leather shoes, nothing else. A costume gets you a laugh and a spilt pint. A shirt like this gets you the best seat at the bar, and Saturday 31 October is the night to prove it.

Four mates, one round, four prints. The pint just landed on the bar, and nobody is dressed as anything.

This is day 29 of our daily Dark Season series. Last time out we covered what to wear on a Halloween date night; today the venue is the original social network: the pub. If you want the bigger picture first, start with our guide to Halloween outfits without a costume.

What should a man wear to the pub on Halloween?

A printed shirt in a dark, busy design, worn closed. Choose a base of brown, black or deep navy so the room's warm light flatters it, then add colour only through the print. Black trousers, black leather shoes, no hat, no prop. Every other man in the bar has bought a plastic accessory; you have bought one decision.

Is a printed shirt better than a costume at the pub?

For a normal Saturday pub night, yes. A costume has a shelf life of one hour, makes carrying pints awkward and cannot be worn again on Sunday. A printed shirt works at the bar, at the table, at the fireworks the following week and at the Christmas drinks. It also does the one thing a mask cannot: it lets people see your face while you tell the story.

How do you wear a bold shirt in a traditional pub?

Fully buttoned to the collar, cuffs fastened, with one thin sliver of placket showing. Tuck it in. Keep the sleeve length to the wrist bone. Stand under the lamp, not beside the fruit machine. For a quieter pub, pick a tonal print such as the Cross Beam; for a loud crew night, go to the cassettes and the guitars.

What colours work best in a candlelit, wood-panelled pub?

Warm browns, oxblood, bottle green, deep purple and black, with small flashes of pink or gold. Mahogany and amber lamplight swallow pale pastels and flatter anything dark. Choose a satin cotton with a soft sheen: it catches the lamp without glaring. Avoid bright white grounds under harsh light unless the print itself is the point, as it is with a cassette collage.

Does the Halloween pub rulebook change when the clocks go back?

Slightly. Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, so the walk to the pub is in the dark all week and Saturday 31 October is a full dark evening. Pack a coat, not a cape: a black overcoat or a plain wool jacket worn open over the shirt keeps the print visible and the cold out.

Element Do Don't
Shirt Dark print, satin cotton, buttoned to the collar Open chest, rolled sleeves
Trousers Plain black or charcoal, tailored Fancy-dress trousers
Shoes Black leather, polished Trainers that squeak on the boards
Layer Plain wool jacket or overcoat, worn open A second print
Accessories A watch, nothing else Masks, fangs, plastic props

What should you not wear to a Halloween pub night?

  • A full-body costume you cannot sit down in.
  • Face paint that ends up on someone else's shoulder.
  • A novelty Halloween T-shirt with a slogan.
  • Three open buttons and a gold chain.
  • Two competing prints, such as a shirt with a patterned waistcoat.
  • Trainers with a tailored shirt in a traditional pub.
  • A shirt cut too loose: our cut is tailored-slim, so if you are between sizes, size up.

Which three outfits should a man build for Halloween at the pub?

Edit one, the quiet one. The Midnight Club Cross Beam shirt with black Claudio Lugli Fitted Chinos, black boots and a charcoal overcoat. Dark, dotted and almost conservative until the collar lining shows.

Edit two, the storyteller. The Vintage Cassette shirt from the Claudio Lugli Printed Shirts Collection, black trousers and a black leather belt. Loud, nostalgic and a conversation starter before you reach the bar.

Edit three, the early-evening pint. The Control Pad shirt from the Claudio Lugli Short-Sleeve Prints Collection for a warm back room, with black trousers. (Our Claudio Lugli Fitted Chino Shorts are for summer beer gardens, not 31 October.)

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a printed shirt to a Halloween pub night?

Yes: buttoned to the collar with black trousers, it is the smartest non-costume answer in the room.

Should I wear a costume to the pub on 31 October?

Only if the invitation says so; otherwise a dark print says Halloween without the plastic.

What colour shirt suits a pub's lighting?

Brown, black, oxblood, deep green and purple: warm, dark colours glow under amber lamps.

How do Claudio Lugli shirts fit?

The cut is tailored-slim, so if you are between sizes, size up.

Can I wear the same shirt again after Halloween?

Yes, which is the point: it works at the pub, at Bonfire Night on Thursday 5 November and at Christmas drinks.
